Do you remember I promised you to show my grandma’s table cloth? It’s time to keep my word. Here it is. This is the table cloth my grandma made.
My Summer Vacation
In the summer I visited my family in Sri Lanka. It was a fun and a long overdue vacation for us. It also was a busy trip and I had so many things planned in my agenda and taking pictures of this table cloth along with my grandmother was on top of my list. I’m so very happy that I succeeded. Grandmother was a happy poser too.
My Grandma
She is always a bliss to have around. She is 84 years young. Grandma likes to take care of herself and everyone around her. Her favorite hobby is crochet. She can read and write Tamil. She likes to pretend to read English and Sinhalese newspaper like in the picture below. I was lucky to capture this candid moment, which brings lovely memories from my childhood. When asked what she read, she laughs and say ‘I just looked at the pictures’ which I find adorable. The best thing about her is, she loves to pamper me and I love to be pampered by her.
The Table Cloth
She made this table cloth more than 10 years ago. My memory of her sitting in a corner and crocheting like it’s no big deal. I have always amazed how her hand moved swiftly but elegantly when she crochets.
She used thread to make this tablecloth. The diameter of this table is 60 inches. It is next to impossible to use such thin thread for a huge project like this. She might have put it on the table more than a thousand times to get the measurements right and she might have re-done countless numbers of stitches when the stitch count goes wrong but she never gave up!
As child I remember thinking that I could never acquire this skill or make anything like what she did because it was pure magic. Now I know how to crochet but I still am in awe looking at this table cloth. I believe grandma’s table cloth is made with tons of dedication, patience, hard work and pure love!
Enjoy reading and happy crocheting!
