Mum’s Bookmark is a free crochet pattern you can download anytime in this blog. It’s a beautiful bookmark you can either make the flower with a single color or use multiple colors and make it more fun.
Where did the name come from?
Awhile ago I was making a PDF with ’10 Ways to Use a Simple Thread Doily Pattern’ for my subscribers. It has 10 things you can make with a thread doily pattern. If you’d like to get a copy for yourself, click the link below. It is an informative list and a free download.
While I was working on this list, my family and I did some outdoor activities and we roamed around Charlotte walking in different neighborhoods, having ice-cream, taking pictures of ourselves and the city, random objects, beautiful murals and etc. It was a really lovely day. In one of those walks, I saw a bicycle they had kept as a decoration with flowers grown in the basket. It was unique and a neat idea to repurpose an old bicycle. The flowers were beautiful too. I clicked some pictures of it and I didn’t think much of it at the time except that it was beautiful.
The next day or two days later, I decided to make bookmark to this list I was making with the said pattern. I chose a few colors which was a great combination I thought. I got Yellow, Peach and Maroon and Sage Green for the stem and leaves.
Later, after I made the bookmark, I wanted to take some pictures of it for the ‘gram’ and I was going back in my gallery and looking at previous pictures.
Guess What!?
I see the pictures I took the other day and I was in for a pleasant surprise! Look at the picture below, which I clicked the other day.
I was mind blown! I definitely didn’t choose the same colors but I guess I was subconsciously thinking of them.
Isn’t it facinating, how our minds work??
Amazing right?
So, when it came to naming the bookmark, I sent this picture to my friend, Ann, to see if she knows the name of the flower. I thought I can Use the same Name or something related to it. She replied, “I’m no poesy expert, but the flower looks like a type of mum.” I was like what’s mum? I’ve never heard of it. I googled it (obviously!) and I found I already knew what it is..! Chrysanthemums! I know that. I also found this flower is from the same family. ‘ Type of mum’! This phrase got me thinking and later I came up with Mum’s Bookmark.
It is also a wordplay with mom and the flower. I like things like that even though only I know the real meaning of it. So that’s why I always write about the name in my post when I write about the pattern. Assuming you read the Stellar Snowflake blogpost. If you didn’t here’s the link. Do read it.
You know what else I realized? I always have a story for the name. I think that’s because I give a lot of thought to it. Most of the time, I can’t just randomly pick a name for my patterns. It has to have meaning or some connection to something.
Anyways… Let’s get back to the pattern.
The Crochet Bookmark Pattern
Mum’s Bookmark crochet pattern is an easy pattern you can whip up in less than an hour.
It’s a great gift idea for anyone.
If you know someone who reads and you want to give a little something. Mum’s bookmark is a great option.
I first made one for myself and I made another one with the same colours for my daughter because it was too pretty. Then she asked me to make another one for her and she wants to pick her own colours. Which is another fun thing you can do. The options are endless.
Another thing you can change is the length of the steam. I like to keep it short so when I open the book the flower sits beautifully between the pages. If you have a different idea do let me know.
